Sukhee Kang was the first Korean-American to serve as mayor for the city of Irvine, California. He first entered politics after the Los Angeles riots in 1992, serving as chairman for the Orange County Korean American Coalition and the Korean American Scholarship Foundation. In 2004 and 2006 he was elected as an Irvine City Councilmember and served on several boards for Orange County. He was twice elected mayor in 2008 and 2010. Currently, Kang serves as special advisor to the chancellor for South Korean relations at the University of California Irvine. Updated 2012
