Subra Suresh, born in Chennai, India in 1956, is the ninth president of Carnegie Mellon University. Previously he served as director of the National Science Foundation from 2010 to 2013. Appointed by President Obama, he led the federal science agency in its mission to advance the fields of science and engineering research. He also served as dean of the School of Engineering at MIT. His honors include the 2011 Padma Shri Award and the Franklin Institute's 2012 Benjamin Franklin Medal in Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science. Updated 2014
