Steven Muller served as president of Johns Hopkins University from 1972 to 1990, as well as president of Johns Hopkins Hospital for a decade. Assuming his presidency at a time when the university was recovering from budget shortfalls, he led the institution through a period of unprecedented growth. Among his achievements, Muller established the Johns Hopkins-Nanjing University Center for Chinese and American Studies, and was instrumental in bringing the Space Telescope Science Institute, the entity that runs the Hubble Space Telescope program, to Johns Hopkins.
