S. R. Srinivasa Varadhan is a professor of mathematics and Frank J. Gould Professor of Science at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University. For his research, which ranged widely over different areas of probability theory he has been awarded honors including the American Mathematical Society's 1996 Leroy Steele Prize, the George David Birkhoff Prize in 1994, and the Abel Prize in 2007, for his work on large deviations.
