Osvaldo Golijov

Composer Osvaldo Golijov left his homeland of Argentina in 1983 to escape its then ruling repressive right-wing military government. He moved first to Jerusalem, where he studied at the Rubin Academy, then immigrated to the United States to earn his Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania and continue his studies at the Tanglewood Institute in Massachusetts. In the early 1990s he began to work closely with two string quartets, the St. Lawrence and the Kronos, developing a semi-chaotic style of music. Yiddishbbuk, a collection of his chamber music released by EMI in 2002, was nominated for a Grammy award. He is the recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship and the Vilcek Prize, and continues to release new works merging a wide range of musical traditions. Updated 2013
