Osi Umenyiora grew up playing soccer in Nigeria but was pushed toward football after settling in Alabama as a teenager. Following a successful run at Troy State University, he was drafted by the New York Giants in 2003. In 2005, he had a breakout season with the second-highest number of sacks in the league, winning All-Pro recognition and playing in the Pro Bowl.
