Melikset Khachiyan, born in the former Soviet Union in 1970, began playing chess at the age of eight. At 10 years old he won the Baku Junior Championship and two years later became a Soviet Candidate Master. Around the same time he began to coach, bringing up four Junior World Champions and being named Honored Chess Coach of both the Armenian Republic as well as the Republic of Moldova. In 2001 he immigrated to the United States, where his first tournament was the National Open in Las Vegas. Winning numerous prestigious competitions, he was awarded the title of Grandmaster in 2006.
