Martin Indyk

Martin Indyk was born in 1951 in London, England, and raised in Australia. After earning his PhD from the Australian National University, he served as an advisor to the Australian Prime Minister on the Middle East, then immigrated to the U.S. in 1982. With his expertise on Middle Eastern and Israeli affairs, he has served in many roles at the top levels of U.S. diplomacy, most notably as U.S. Ambassador to Israel, the first Jew to be appointed to the position. He has also served as assistant secretary of state for Near East affairs and as director of Near and South Asian affairs for the U.S. National Security Council. Currently he serves as Vice President and Director for Foreign Policy at the Brookings Institution. Updated 2012
