Born in West Java, Indonesia in 1941, Joyce L. Kennard served as a justice on California's Supreme Court from 1989 to 2014. The court's longest-serving justice, she was also the first Asian-American and only the second woman to serve in this position. Kennard was part of the majorities that struck down California's ban on same-sex marriage, as well as a law that required parental consent for minors' abortions. Updated 2014
