After seeing her first Rett Syndrome patient while working as a resident neurological pediatrician at the Baylor College of Medicine, Huda Zoghbi put aside her clinical practice to focus on research. After 16 years of work, her lab successfully identified the mutated gene responsible for this disorder of the nervous system. Zoghbi also works to raise the awareness of Rett Syndrome within the scientific community. She was awarded the 2009 Vilcek Prize in Biomedical Science. Updated 2014
