The research of evolutionary biologist Harmit Singh Malik, who was awarded the 2008 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, as well as the 2011 Vilcek Prize for Creative Promise in Biomedical Science, has led to important new insights into the evolutionary struggle between viruses and humans. Malik hopes these insights will lead to new drugs to combat HIV. He is currently an investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and a member of the Basic Sciences Division at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Updated 2011
