A professor and vice-chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Columbia University, Gordana Vunjak-Novakovic has pioneered groundbreaking and potentially lifesaving methods of developing new biomaterials and scaffold architecture to engineer human tissue. In 2012, she was given one of the highest distinctions awarded to an engineer when she was elected to the National Academy of Engineering. She often serves as an advisor to government organizations on tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Updated 2014
