George Walter Landau is a diplomat with a distinguished history of serving the United States. Born in Vienna, Austria in 1920, he attended New York University and George Washington University. From 1942 to 1947, he served in the U.S. Army rising from private to captain, military intelligence. Later he entered the U.S. Foreign Service, serving as the ambassador to Paraguay, from 1972 to 1977, to Chile until 1982, and finally to Venezuela until 1985. Throughout, he promoted civil liberties and the rule of law. His many honors include the Presidential Meritorious Service Award in 1984, and the American Foreign Service Association award for Lifetime Contributions to American Diplomacy in 2013. After retiring from the Foreign Service, he served as president of the Americas Society and the Council of the Americas. Updated 2013
