One of the world's leading experts on learning and behavior, Eric Kandel performed groundbreaking research on what happens in the brain during memory formation. He was awarded the 2000 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine, and it is possible that his work will lead to new treatments for diseases of memory loss such as Alzheimer's. Kandel's memoir, In Search of Memory: The Emergence of a New Science of the Mind, was a winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Award. Updated 2010
