Michael Foale is one of NASA’s most experienced astronauts, holding the record for the most time spent in space by a U.S. astronaut: 374 days. After earning his doctorate in laboratory astrophysics at Cambridge University in 1982, Foale moved to Houston to work on Space Shuttle navigation problems. NASA chose him as an astronaut candidate in 1987. He retired from NASA in 2013 to pursue his passion for green aviation and is developing an electric-powered aircraft. Updated 2013
