Albert Einstein, considered the most important physicist of the 20th century, if not all time, was born in 1879 in Ulm, Germany. His discoveries in his papers on the photoelectric effect, Brownian motion, and general relativity forever altered the world of modern physics. He won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1921. Immigrating to the U.S. he continued his work developing the unified field theory. He also worked as an activist, participating in the effort to control nuclear weapons and campaigning for civil rights for African Americans. Updated 2007
