He leads the overall creative and design strategy of the Corporation’s communications content, including the website, publications (print and digital), presentations, marketing materials, audience engagement efforts, events, multimedia, and social media.
A strategic thinker, Um has worked with many iconic global brands, including EdLab at Teachers College, Columbia University; the New York Public Library; the School of Visual Arts (SVA); Interior Design magazine; Case Commons; and Cline, Davis & Mann.
Growing up surrounded by his family’s publishing and bookstore business in South Korea, he learned from a young age about the importance of communication, influence, and perception — as well as the value of expanding one’s mind and experiences.
Um is a five-time winner of the University & College Designers Association’s annual design competition. He was also a finalist for the PR News Nonprofit Award in web information design and the recipient of a Digital Design Award from Print magazine. His digital works were twice featured as Communication Arts magazine’s “Web Pick-of-the-Day.”
He received a BA and an MA in mass communications from Sogang University in Seoul, Korea, going on to earn a BFA in graphic design from SVA in New York City. With a multilevel perspective on the art of communication, Um has created numerous award-winning works within the education, design, tech, nonprofit, and commercial sectors. His passion for effective communications drives his fresh approach to creating engaging solutions that help advance the mission of Carnegie Corporation of New York.
