The next generation faces a growing gap between classroom learning and online content, requiring skills to distinguish fact from misinformation and disinformation, particularly with the rise of AI-generated disinformation. The Poynter Institute, a nonpartisan nonprofit leader in factchecking and news training, launched MediaWise in 2018 to teach students and young voters to identify online misinformation. With Carnegie’s support, the program will equip students and educators with advanced media literacy and AI-fluency tools, integrated directly into the platforms young people use. The program will be implemented in partnership with Dave Jorgenson’s Local News International (LNI), whose U.S. audience is primarily ages 16–35. Key deliverables include: a professional Media Literacy & AI Certificate Course and Toolkit for educators, reaching 5,000 school districts; “The MediaWise Weekly” video and lesson series with LNI; updated core curricula; new PSA campaigns via digital creators; and dissemination through teacher conferences. The initiative aims to directly serve at least 100,000 educators and 3 million students.

Founded by Sal Khan in 2020, Schoolhouse.world (Schoolhouse)offers free online peer tutoring opportunities to 190,000 learners aged 13 and up from over 180 countries. In addition to the demonstrated gains for learners, Schoolhousegives more than 30,000 young people who volunteer as tutors an opportunity to give back, learn academic material in greater depth, and learn new skills as tutors. Building on its success, They havelaunched the Global Dialogues program which fosters discourse skills for students ages 14–21 through structured Zoom discussions on complex civic topics. Across both programs, the Schoolhouse Portfolio compiles students’ subject-matter mastery, tutoring contributions, and dialogue participation into credentials considered by admissions offices at over 50 colleges and universities. Over the grant term, Schoolhouse aims to grow to 80,000 tutors and 50,000 Dialogues participants, with at least 40,000 of those students earning formal competencies on their portfolio. Schoolhouse will also implement platform and safety improvements, refine credentialing pathways, and expand its network.

With Carnegie support, Valor will launch the Carnegie Career & Postsecondary Pathways Initiative, a suite of programs including a work-based learning microschool, a career education track in mental health careers, a dual enrollment option offering college courses, and an alumni fellowship. Valor will pilot this programming over the course of the grant, serving approximately 400 students and alumni, and providing them with industry-recognized credentials and early college credit to strengthen economic mobility. The National Governors Association (NGA) is the bipartisan organization of America’s fifty-five state and territorial governors, convening governors and other state leaders, conducting policy research, and assisting with government relations. Each year, the Chair of the NGA’s Executive Committee, which consists entirely of governors, leads a high-priority “Chair’s Initiative” on an issue relevant to all state leaders, such as Governor Spencer Cox’s “Disagree Better” or Governor Kevin Stitt’s “Reigniting the American Dream.” At the NGA’s summer summit in July, Governor Wes Moore will become Chair and his initiative will focus on national service. His emphasis will be on governors leading the charge to launch and grow state service programs such as the Maryland Corps and the One Utah Service Fellowship. The use of commercial drone and autonomous technologies has given violent non-state actors, including insurgents and related criminal networks, the ability to launch sophisticated air attacks once limited to major militaries. Yet efforts to manage these risks remain fragmented and largely reactive, focusing on specific hardware or after-the-fact controls rather than the cross-border networks that enable proliferation. To address this threat, the Tech Policy Institute at Cornell University will build an early-warning system to track and forecast how drone components move through targeted illicit markets in Africa. Using a custom forecasting model, the project will identify where the next trafficking corridors and operational drone hubs are likely to emerge before they become active threats, helping governments and private-sector companies implement systems to block high-risk buyers from accessing sensitive technology.

With support from Carnegie Corporation of New York, GPFA has established The Sister’s Place, a residential and learning center in Bong County near Cuttington University. The 20-bedroom dormitory provides safe housing for girls who might otherwise face barriers to continuing their education, including unsafe or unstable living conditions. The center also features an ICT lab to build digital skills, a Peace Hut for leadership and conflict resolution training, and spaces that support wellbeing and personal growth. Established in 1964, the University of Massachusetts Boston (UMass Boston) is Massachusetts’ most diverse R1 research university, and 80 percent of its alumni stay in the region to drive the local economy. Building on a five-decade-long partnership with Boston Public Schools, UMass Boston’s “Civic Works” initiative will create new educational programs that combine academic, career, and durable skills leading to in-demand jobs. Students will earn microcredentials aligned with the skills that employers say they need and that may count for credit toward future degrees. With Carnegie support, over the next three years, UMass Boston will collaborate with regional stakeholders to co-develop a suite of microcredentials in high-demand areas, piloting a subset of them with 500 students before scaling across the five partner high schools reaching approximately 2,355 students. The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) is expanding its model for anticipating and mitigating conflict-induced displacement into Nigeria and Colombia. Most responses to conflict-driven displacement are reactive, intervening only after violence has escalated and communities have fled. This project addresses that gap by combining displacement forecasting with community-based early warning systems to identify displacement risks three to four months in advance and mobilize pre-agreed responses before crises fully materialize. In Nigeria, the project will link forecasts to social cohesion programming and humanitarian mediation to reduce escalation in areas affected by recurrent inter-communal conflict. In Colombia, it will integrate forecast triggers within an existing rapid response mechanism to shorten response times and reduce protection risks. DRC is one of a small number of organizations working in the emerging field of anticipatory action for conflict, and co-chairs the Global Working Group on Anticipatory Action for Displacement with the International Organization for Migration. The project aims to contribute to reducing forced displacement and its humanitarian consequences while generating evidence and learning for the broader field.

Every year, tens of thousands of children journey alone to the United States fleeing violence, war, political upheaval, and poverty with more than 535,000 unaccompanied immigrant children encountered by Customs and Border Protection at the U.S.-Mexico border since 2020. For more than fifteen years, Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) has created meaningful protections for children, informed policy changes, and offered direct legal and psychosocial services.
