of international affairs, Steve
Del Rosso, Director of the Carnegie Corporation's International
Peace
and Security program, analyzes the fraught effort by foundations
to develop an overarching conceptual framework for their philanthropic
efforts in the post-Cold War and post-9/11 eras. Del Rosso argues
that the quest for one "universal field theory" - particularly
as it has become enveloped in the fuzzy rhetoric of globalization-
is a "fools errand," but that private foundations have
made a significant contribution to redefining and understanding
