States at Risk
Carnegie Corporation has dedicated considerable attention and resources to the major global problem of states at risk of instability or collapse. Continuing challenges in Afghanistan and Iraq, across Africa and elsewhere prove that much more remains to be done.
The Corporation works independently and with other funders to improve policy and practice on states at risk through:
Engaging local expertise and capacity to help build sustainable peace in states at risk
Multiple approaches to post-conflict peacebuilding have produced mixed results. To help improve on this record, the Corporation supports ongoing research and analysis that reflects local perspectives and insights. A major new initiative will seek to create a network of Northern and Southern scholars working on peacebuilding and to improve local capacity to address this challenge.
Improving the effectiveness and knowledge base of institutions addressing states at risk
Given the inadequacy of many national and international approaches to states at risk, the Corporation has worked to promote institutional reform in the U.S. government, the UN and other organizations. Toward this end, the Corporation supports efforts to provide rigorous, independent analysis of specific states at risk challenges to policymakers in accessible form and to promote more effective policy responses.
Developing the field of peacebuilding
The number of states at risk is expected to increase in the decades ahead. The Corporation supports efforts to promote the next generation of experts to address this daunting problem and to increase the quality, reach and professional standing of this interdisciplinary "field-in-the-making."
