In a recent ceremony at the State Department, then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton presented Afghan President Hamid Karzai with the first of what will eventually be hundreds of thousands of digitized manuscripts, rare books, maps and photographs related to the history of Afghanistan and neighboring regions.

This calligraphic fragment includes four lines in Persian wishing its owner good fortune and happiness on the occasion of 'id, the Muslim feast that marks the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting.
“The materials will give researchers around the world – as well as the Afghan people themselves – unprecedented access to these historical documents,” said Mohammad Afzal, Library Officer of the Afghanistan Research and Evaluation Unit.
