Centennial Moments
The Brennan Center for Justice
The Brennan Center for Justice at the New York University School of Law was founded in 1995 as a “living memorial to Justice William Brennan’s ideals of standing up for the downtrodden.” A non-partisan public policy and law institute, the Center seeks to build upon the late Supreme Court Justice’s work and values by focusing on the fundamental issues of democracy and justice. Its activities range from advancing voting rights to campaign finance reform, from racial justice in criminal law to presidential power in the fight against terrorism. A singular institution—part think tank, part public interest law firm, part advocacy group—the Brennan Center combines scholarship, legislative and legal advocacy, and communications in its efforts to win meaningful, measurable change in the public sector. Over the years, it has received more than $3.5 million in support from Carnegie Corporation.
