Carnegie Scholars, Front and Center on Middle East Developments
Numerous Corporation grantees have been front and center in early 2011 as experts commenting on the developments in Egypt, Tunisia and the region, and some have been providing advice directly to policymakers. Some of the analysts appearing on TV, radio, in print and web-based media outlets are Carnegie Scholars. In Egypt, one Corporation grantee, Amr Shalakany, associate professor of law at the American University in Cairo and a 2008 Carnegie Scholar, spent days camped in Tahrir Square, joining the protestors and writing about his experiences in a February 3 article, “A Week in Egypt’s Twilight Zone,” which appeared in The New York Times
