FAQs for Grantseekers

The following are answers to frequently asked questions regarding eligibility and Carnegie Corporation’s grantmaking processes.

Do you have application deadlines?
There are no formal deadlines to apply for funding. The foundation accepts letters of inquiry on an ongoing basis.

Can I schedule a meeting with foundation staff to discuss projects and/or funding opportunities?
Due to the large number of requests we receive, we are unable to accommodate requests for meetings. To determine if a project is a match with our program areas please visit the How to Apply section of the website and submit a letter of inquiry.

Can I get a scholarship or grant for my child or myself to attend school?
No, the foundation does not make grants for this type of scholarship.

How can my organization apply?
To submit a letter of inquiry, please visit the How to Apply section of the website and follow the directions on the page.

Can I send a letter of inquiry by hardcopy mail?
No, we require all letters of inquiry to be submitted through our online application system. To do so, please visit the “How to Apply” section of the website and follow the directions on the page.

Can we apply if we are not a nonprofit organization?
Yes, but funding is unlikely as the foundation awards the majority of its grants to support public agencies, universities and public charities that are tax-exempt under section 501 (c)(3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code or their equivalent.

Can the Carnegie Corporation fund internationally?
Yes, but on a very limited scope.  The foundation's charter allows for a small percent of funding to be granted to nonprofit organizations based in countries that are or have been members of the British Commonwealth.

Do you fund general support grants?
The majority of the foundation’s grants are not for general support.

Does Carnegie Corporation fund capital campaigns or endowments?
The foundation does not fund endowments or capital costs, including construction or renovation.

When and how will we be notified if our application has been declined or if the foundation will be requesting a formal proposal?
Organizations will receive an automated response confirming that their application has been received and are generally notified via email within 4-6 weeks if their application has been declined or if the foundation would like to request additional information about their funding request.

Does the foundation provide feedback on proposals that are not selected for funding?
Due to the large number of requests we receive, we are unable to respond to requests for feedback. Our decision is focused on the substance of your proposed work, and how well it fits with our grantmaking programs, goals and funding strategies at the time.
